Sustainability

Sustainability is critical part of XLNT. Not all bioliquids and biofuel sold are sustainable unless procured from the sustainable source. Sustainability defines based on the land-use, deforestation and GHG emissions. The EU has defined a set of sustainability criteria to ensure that the use of biofuels (used in transport) and bio-liquids (used for electricity and heating) is done in a way that guarantees real carbon savings and protects biodiversity. Only biofuels and bioliquids that comply with the criteria can receive government support or count towards national renewable energy targets.

The main criteria :

  1. To be considered sustainable, biofuels must achieve greenhouse gas savings of at least 35% in comparison to fossil fuels. This savings requirement rises to 50% in 2017. In 2018, it rises again to 60% but only for new production plants. All life cycle emissions are taken into account when calculating greenhouse gas savings. This includes emissions from cultivation, processing, and transport.
  2. Biofuels cannot be grown in areas converted from land with previously high carbon stock such as wetlands or forests.
  3. Biofuels cannot be produced from raw materials obtained from land with high biodiversity such as primary forests or highly biodiverse grasslands. (Taken from European commission website : ec-europa.eu/energy/en/topics/renewable-energy/biofuels/sustainability-criteria )

XLNT is certified under ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon certification) for POME as first collection point for wastes and trading of other bioliquids. XLNT understands the importance of these certification and have encouraged its suppliers to certify under ISCC. XLNT ensures that each supply of bioliquids and biofuels are traceable upto the origin and provides all the support to certify the value chain.

Apart from the standard guidelines set by ISCC in Europe, each member state has its own set of sustainability guidelines in addition and each lot of the bioliquids and biofuels supplied should satisfy those guidelines. XLNT meets each country sustainability guidelines while making their supply of bioliquids and biofuels to client.

In addition, XLNT carries out their own due-diligence on sustainability at the sources and validates the report yearly. XLNT also encourage its clients to visit the sourcing location and conduct their due-diligence to understand the sustainability.
